This course is not a mandatory requirement for becoming a Justice of the Peace (Qualified) however it has been designed to prepare participants for the role by providing the knowledge and skills required to operate as a JP (Qual).

Subjects Covered

  • History of the JP (Qual) appointment
  • Overview of the court systems
  • Familiarity of legislation and rules
  • Witnessing documents
  • Statutory Declarations
  • Non-bench judicial duties
  • Minor bench judicial duties
  • Recording requirements

Course Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment and may apply to the Department of Justice and Attorney General for appointment as a Justice of the Peace (Qualified).

Prerequisites

All participants must meet the following requirements in order to be eligible to apply for appointment as a JP (Qual) therefore we require the same standards prior to enrolment into this course:

  • Must be an Australian citizen by birth, decent or grant
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must be of good character

A level of language, literacy and numeracy skills to perform the duties of a JP (Qual) is also required. If you are unsure of your eligibility to be appointed as a JP (Qual) please clarify this with the Department of Justice and Attorney General prior to enrolling in this course.

Appointment as a JP (Qual)

Applications for appointment as a Justice of the Peace (Qualified) are processed by the Department of Justice and Attorney General. Prior to lodging an application, participants must meet the suitability requirements for appointment and pass a JP Exam (3 Hour Open Book Exam). The JP Exam is conducted at most Magistrates' Courts and requires a booking by contacting the relevant court house. This exam is separate to the assessments completed on the course and the course does not guarantee a successful result in the JP Exam or appointment as a JP (Qual).

If you require further clarification on the process of applying to become a JP (Qual) or wish to obtain Exam dates, please visit the Department of Justice and Attorney General Website.
