Why we’re holding a Morning Tea for Muscular Dystrophy

On Monday March 6th Asset College will be holding a Morning Tea for Muscular Dystrophy at our North Lakes office.

Muyscular Dystrophy is a group of genetic diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass in the body. Muscular Dystrophy gets very little air-time or promotion, even though there is no cure.

One of our valued members of our administration team recently received the news that her son had been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and knew at that moment, that their lives were about to change forever.

“We felt devastation and sadness learning that there is no cure and his life span may be shortened. We wondered why this is happening to our boy who is so full of life and is so active”, Peta says.

Muscular dystrophy is common in male children and leads to muscle degeneration resulting in trouble with breathing and swallowing and most will undoubtedly end up needing a wheelchair.

When asked how the diagnosis will affect Aidan and the family, Peta says, “Eventually Aidan will need help with simple everyday tasks. His Dad and I will become his full-time carers”.

While medication, therapy, breathing aids or surgery may help to maintain a person’s function, their life span is often shortened and their ability to do simple everyday tasks can be gradually lost.

This disease is one of the least promoted amongst the many that affect thousands of Australians and is one of the reasons why Asset College are proud to support Peta and her family in raising funds and awareness for this much-deserved cause.

“The money raised at our morning tea along with all the generous community support that is received goes to provide practical and often life changing services. It will help Muscular Dystrophy Queensland provide vital support and equipment for families living right here in QLD”.

If you would like to attend our morning tea and join us in helping to raise money for this worthy cause, please pop into our North Lakes office on Monday 6th of March, 10:30am.

If you can’t attend, but would still like to donate please head to the Muscular Dystrophy Queensland website. All donations over $2 are tax-deductible and every little bit helps towards making life wonderful for those with MD and their families.
