Student Saves Life

HLTAID003

There is no greater achievement, than that of saving a life. Rhys Collins, current Asset Training Australia student knows this feeling.

When Rhys Collins signed up to do his First Aid refresher course he had no idea that he would be paramount in an emergency situation so soon after completing his training.

Rhys remembers those first moments that he knew it was going to be up to him to take action. ‘It was a couple of days after I did the First Aid Course with Asset Training Australia. I guess it was around 7pm and I’d just got home when the lady across the road from me came over in an absolutely hysterical state saying that her friend, an elderly man, had fallen over unconscious and wasn’t breathing’.

‘WHEN I GOT THERE HE WAS LYING ON A GRAVEL DRIVEWAY AND THE DAYLIGHT WAS FADING QUICKLY, HE HAD NO PULSE, HE DEFINITELY WASN’T BREATHING AND YEAH, HE WAS REALLY COLD AND BLUE…. HE WAS GONE… ‘.

Rhys remained calm and instructed the man’s friend on what to do to assist him including calling 000 and by turning the car headlights on so that he could clearly see what he was doing.

Rhys began CPR and continued for 8 minutes until the man’s colour began to return, he had a weak pulse and he had begun breathing again. At this point the ambulance arrived and Rhys continued to assist until they were set up and could take over.

While First Aid training may seem like a pretty simple activity to take part in, the benefits of knowing how to correctly perform CPR and administer First Aid while waiting for emergency services to arrive may end up meaning more to someone than you’ll ever know – something that Rhys is now familiar with.

‘Doing the First Aid refresher course is always a wise move for those ‘out of the blue’ times when your called upon to do something important when nobody else can or will’, Rhys says. ‘By the end of it, I’d compressed his chest well over 1000 times and through all that, had brought him back to life. So, it goes to show that you never give up the effort huh?’

We send our best wishes and thoughts to all involved in the incident and are delighted that they are on the road to recovery.

Thank you to Rhys Collins for allowing us to share his story.
