Budget Delivers on Mature Age Employment Opportunities
The 2017-18 Budget introduced a range of employment initiatives that will go into effect from Sunday 1 July 2018 to support those aged 50 years and over through training, work experience and better links to employers.
- A new Career Transition Program to provide opportunities for mature age people to re-skill through short intensive courses that consist of skills assessments, exploration of suitable careers, and research of the local labour market.
- An expansion of the National Work Experience Programme (NWEP), to provide additional work experience opportunities to mature age people. The expansion will increase the number of NWEP places by 4,000 each year and provide incentive payments to providers and host businesses.
- A series of up to 10 Pathway to Work pilots will be established in selected growth industries to create additional pathways for those on income support to gain employment and to help combat negative perceptions of unemployed people—particularly mature age and people with disability.
