Firearms and Defensive Tactics for the Security Industry

This program has been specifically designed to meet the licensing requirements for a Security (Guard) Weapons Licence in Queensland.

The course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to:

  • safely and effectively determine a response to risk situations
  • manage incidents using firearms, ballistic vests, batons and handcuffs.

Participants will also receive training in:

  • weapon retention
  • weapon disarming
  • weapon maintenance
  • the legalities pertaining to the use of force

Our instructors are industry professionals with several years’ experience in the safe handling of firearms in Security, Military, and Recreational Shooting environments.

If you are already a licensed armed security officer and need to complete your re-validation course, you will need to complete Annual Firearms Re-certification.

Course Outcomes

On successful completion of this course you will be awarded a Statement of Attainment. This will allow for the application to Weapons Licensing Queensland for a Security (Guard) Firearms Licence with firearm categories C, E and H.

This will be a requirement for the following job roles:

Entry Requirements

In order to undertake this course, you must:

  • currently hold or be applying for a Class 1 Security Providers Licence with the endorsement for Security Officer (Cash-In-Transit) or equivalent certifications. Not sure if this is you? Contact us.
  • Be 18 years of age or older and have had no criminal convictions in previous 10 years to be eligible for a Security Providers Licence. Note: driving offences (e.g. speeding, drink driving, etc.) are not normally disqualifying offences.
  • Be an Australian Citizen or hold an appropriate Visa to work in the Security Industry in Queensland. Please note, we are unable to train international students or those on a student visa.

There are no prerequisite units required for entry into this course.

However, you will require basic English language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills. If you have not previously completed any vocational training you may be required to undertake an Online LLN ASSESSMENT prior to commencing enrolment in this course.

You must be able to read and understand organisational policies and procedures, write reports and communicate with others in plain English.

Please be advised we are unable to train students on a student visa. You must find a CRICOS registered training provider.

Units of Competency

This qualification is customisable to suit the needs of individual participants and includes a total of three elective units. The units in this course have been chosen to ensure you meet the licensing requirements to apply for a Weapons Licence in QLD.

  • CPPSEC3007A Maintain security of environment
  • CPPSEC3008A Control security risk situations using firearms
  • CPPSEC3014A Control persons using baton
  • CPPSEC3015A Restrain persons using handcuffs
  • 10618NAT Course in Firearms Safety (Category H)

Delivery Options

This course is delivered over 1 week (6 days) in-class supported by a self-paced assessment workbook.

You will attend 1 day at a live firing range where you will receive individual coaching before your safe handling skills and marksmanship are assessed.

The program is conducted primarily as a practical scenario based course with both written and practical assessments. Emphasis is placed on the safe handling of firearms and selecting an appropriate response to risk situations.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Asset College does not offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) on courses with industry licensing outcomes. This includes the Firearms and Defensive tactics course regardless of previous firearms handling experience.


Asset College does not offer online training for this course.

Firearms Licensing

Applications made for Security Guard Firearms Licences are handled by the Weapons Licencing Branch of the Queensland Police. This service incurs a fee to process, approve and issue licences which is not included in the cost of the course.
