How about a mentor for 2019?

It’s the start of a new year and we usually have MANY people harping on about their new year’s resolutions. But, perhaps some of the things they are saying COULD be useful!

January is National Mentoring Month. Having a mentor in any industry is invaluable.

Finding someone who has been in the industry you want to succeed in for much longer than you and breathing in their knowledge and skills can help drive you to the next level.

So, why should you get a mentor in 2019 and how do you find the right person?

Why?

Well here is a list for you.

  • Mentors provide information and knowledge – that you might not know or have struggled finding out before
  • Mentors will tell you what you need to improve on – or so they should!
  • Mentors will keep you accountable
  • Mentors can help you make decisions in your personal or professional life
  • Mentors can connect you – to potential clients, industry professionals or other important contacts
  • Mentors are free!

How do I get a mentor?

It might be easier than you think…

Figure out why you want a mentor first

Don’t just start contacting people you think will be good. Write down specifically what you think a mentor should be to you and then stick to it!

Don’t just go for the obvious

Look outside your current workplace. While people in your office might be great mentors, they may not be able to provide you with advice or experience on things outside of your current company culture. To push yourself to the next level, you need to be thinking and experiencing things – outside of the box.

LinkedIn might be an ok place to start or your local business networking groups!

Ask your mentor

Set up a meeting with your mentor and discuss a possible mentoring relationship. If the person doesn’t seem that excited about becoming a mentor, probably best to go with your next candidate.

Then, establish a regular catch up schedule – there is no point in having a mentor if you don’t keep in contact!

Try mentoring out in 2019….
