Description of Role

Justices of the Peace act as an independent and objective witnesses to documents that people use for official or legal purposes. They witness oaths or affidavits, statutory declarations and affirmations, witness signatures, attest the execution of a document and certify a true copy of an original document.

While the criteria for eligibility may differ across states, nominees for appointment as a Justice of the Peace must have an adequate standard of education and genuine desire to be of service to the community. They should be of good moral standing and should be respected as individuals of good sense, character and integrity.
