Typists perform typing and word processing work to produce and edit letters, reports and other important documents. They receive or gather data to create documents from scratch or from existing materials. They may also print, copy and prepare their work for physical handout or faxing, or send their work to others in an electronic format.
Typists may also handle clerical duties such as filing, printing, faxing and emailing documents to intended recipients. At times, they may be asked to assist in answering phones and greeting visitors.
Typists work in a variety of environments, including corporate, government, educational and health care settings. They must be able to type quickly and accurately using various data processing tools. They must approach work in an organised and detail-oriented fashion to prevent missed deadlines and spelling, grammar, punctuation, content and document formatting errors.
