(Use-of-Force Instructor)
The 11346NAT Diploma of Operational Safety (Use-of-Force Instructor) is Australia’s first nationally accredited qualification for professionals responsible for training others in the lawful and safe application of force.
This specialised program is designed for those working in security, corrections, law enforcement, and protective services. Learners develop advanced knowledge and practical skills to instruct defensive tactics, self-defence, and the use of batons, handcuffs, OC spray, and related equipment. The course also builds strong foundations in crisis communication, occupational violence prevention, and tactical casualty care.
Graduates will be able to design, deliver, and manage operational safety training programs that meet legislative and organisational requirements. The Use-of-Force Instructor specialisation provides a structured pathway for experienced security professionals to transition into accredited trainer roles, ensuring consistency, professionalism, and community confidence in operational safety practices.

Entry Requirements
Mandatory
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Meet the fit and proper person requirements for possession and use of restricted items/prohibited weapons in your state or territory
- Hold HLTAID011 Provide First Aid (or equivalent) issued within the last three years
- Demonstrate operational experience through a security qualification, current security licence, or relevant employment in an operational role
Recommended
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience applying defensive techniques and using batons, handcuffs, and other defensive equipment
- TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or equivalent) if you plan to deliver accredited training after completing this qualification
Units of Competency
This course requires completion of 12 units: 6 core units and 6 electives.
Learners completing the Use-of-Force Instructor specialisation must undertake all electives from Group A.

- NAT11346002 Conduct behavioural observation and suspicious activity recognition
- NAT11346003 Implement crisis communication strategies
- NAT11346004 Implement and review operational security procedures

- NAT11346006 Maintain health and wellbeing in high stress environments
Elective Units – Group A (Use-of-Force Instructor)
- NAT11346007 Manage use of force training programs
- NAT11346008 Instruct self-defence techniques
- NAT11346009 Instruct defensive tactics for operational safety
- NAT11346010 Instruct use of batons for operational safety
- NAT11346011 Instruct use of handcuffs for operational safety
- NAT11346012 Instruct use of OC spray and chemical agents for operational safety
Delivery Options
This qualification is delivered through blended learning over 12 months. Training includes:
- Online study, supported by a series of intensive workshops (1–3 days per unit)
- Workplace-based training requirements (where no workplace is available, these can be completed at an Asset College campus)
