After sixteen years working as a waitress, Katelyn knew she wanted something more. She had always been driven to help others, and as a single mum to a five-year-old daughter, she dreamed of building a career her daughter could look up to. But like many people considering a career change, she wasn’t sure where to start, or whether she would be “cut out for it”.
It was a conversation with her mother that gave her the push she needed. Katelyn had mentioned the idea of becoming a security guard but doubted whether she could do it. Her mother’s advice was simple: try your best – and that was enough to set everything in motion.
Katelyn enrolled in the Certificate II in Security Operations with Asset College in 2024. Her trainer, David, created an environment that made learning enjoyable and engaging. “Doing the course never seemed boring,” she says. “We laughed, we joked and still learnt so much at the same time.” The training not only gave her essential industry knowledge but helped build the confidence and communication skills she relies on every day.
Once qualified, Katelyn discovered just how in-demand security professionals are in Wagga Wagga. Finding work came quickly – within two weeks of calling local employers, she had secured her first position. From there, her career took off. A last-minute shift at the Victoria Hotel impressed the management team so much that they offered her a permanent job. She has gained experience across an impressive range of assignments, including Sturt Mall, the Wagga Show, hospital parking operations, community events, and even supporting Asset College with training simulations – an opportunity she describes as one of her favourites so far.
Her days can vary dramatically, from short shift work to long days with overtime. Despite the demanding schedule, she embraces every part of it. “The people I get to meet and the experiences I get to have are definitely the best part about my work,” she explains. “No two jobs or situations are ever quite the same, and it keeps me on my toes.”
What has meant the most to her, though, is the respect she has earned. Katelyn has consistently received praise for her professionalism, reliability, and warm personality. She has been personally requested by venue owners, managers, patrons and fellow staff – something she finds incredibly rewarding. For someone who once doubted she was “cut out for it”, she has built a reputation many in the field aspire to.
Katelyn hopes to eventually run her own security company when her daughter is older. Her journey has shown her what she’s capable of, and she wants others to know that the same transformation is possible for them. “Don’t wait – just do it,” she says. “It has been one of the best and most rewarding things I’ve ever done. I’m so glad I not only had the opportunity but took it while it was there.”
Katelyn’s story is a powerful reminder that the right training can completely change a person’s path and that confidence often comes after taking the first step.
