Why Security Work Suits People from Diverse Backgrounds
Security roles rely on more than language – they rely on observation, calm decision-making, respectful interaction and presence. Many migrants and refugees bring these skills naturally, often shaped by life experience, cultural values or previous employment.

Things to Know About Security Licensing
To work in the security industry in Australia, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Complete an approved Certificate II in Security Operations
- Pass the required criminal history checks
- Hold a visa that permits you to work in the security industry (this varies by state)
Important: Some visa types – including student and temporary visas – do not allow security licensing in certain states or territories. These are not Asset College rules but are set by state-based licensing regulators.
We will help you check your visa status and licensing eligibility before enrolment. If you’re not currently eligible, we can discuss other training options or help you plan for when your visa allows it.
Language and Learning Support
Security officers must be able to communicate clearly – but you don’t need to be fluent or have perfect grammar.

- Offering language and literacy support where needed
- Using real-life examples to make learning more accessible
- Referring to free English language programs (such as the AMEP) or foundation skills courses if extra support is needed before you start
If you are motivated to learn and ready to put in the effort, we’ll help you build the communication skills required for success.
A Pathway to Long-Term Opportunities
Security work can be a valuable first job in Australia – but it doesn’t have to be your last. Many of our students go on to:
- Work in full-time or part-time security roles
- Move into supervisory or specialised roles
- Study further in public safety, emergency services or compliance
- Start their own businesses or move into related industries
