Many security professionals choose to expand their capabilities through additional training and licensing pathways.

› Licence Pathways – Add Functions to Your QLD Security Licence

Graduates may choose to pursue additional training aligned to recognised security industry roles.

Skill Sets from CPP31318 Certificate III in Security Operations:

These training pathways develop additional capabilities that may be required by employers for specific security roles in Queensland. Some skills relate to activities that are regulated separately, and completing the training alone does not grant approval to perform regulated functions. Individuals must meet any applicable probity, legislative or licensing requirements before undertaking duties where these skills are required.

Other Specialist Security Training:

These qualifications support progression into specialised career areas and may be used when applying for the relevant Queensland licence types.

› Course Pathways to Broaden Career Opportunities

Many security employers value additional industry-recognised competencies. Graduates may choose to strengthen their job prospects by completing short courses such as:

  • RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol)
  • RSG (Responsible Gambling Services)
  • White Card (Construction Industry Induction)
  • Drug and Alcohol Testing

These skills are commonly required across hospitality venues, events, construction sites and other environments where licensed security personnel operate.

› Career Development Support

To help plan next steps, students and graduates are encouraged to attend:

  • Free Career Information Sessions – held weekly on campus and online
  • Employer Connections Events – networking opportunities with employers actively recruiting across the security industry

To work in Queensland as a Security Officer (Unarmed) or Crowd Controller, individuals must hold a Class 1 Security Providers Licence, issued by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). Completing CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations provides the training component required to support an application for these licence functions.

Licensing is a separate process managed entirely by OFT. Applicants should always refer to the latest information before submitting an application.

› What the Class 1 Security Provider Licence Covers

A Class 1 Security Providers Licence may include one or both of the following functions:

Security Officer (Unarmed)

This function authorises licensed personnel to perform duties such as patrolling, safeguarding people and property, monitoring premises, managing access control points and responding to incidents in a range of environments.

Crowd Controller

This function authorises licensed personnel to monitor and manage individual and crowd behaviour, screen patrons, maintain order and support safety at venues, events and public gatherings.

Applicants may choose to apply for one function or apply for both at the same time.

› Key Licensing Considerations

While only the Office of Fair Trading can determine eligibility, individuals applying for a Class 1 licence will generally need to:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Provide acceptable identification
  • Pass criminal history and probity checks
  • Have the right to work in Australia
  • Complete the required training (e.g., CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations)

Additional conditions or documentation may apply depending on personal circumstances. Some factors – such as certain criminal offences – may affect a person’s ability to obtain a licence.

OFT assesses each application independently, and Asset College cannot guarantee licensing outcomes.

› Application Process

A typical licence application involves:

  1. Preparing required identification and supporting documents
  2. Completing the mandatory training
  3. Submitting the licence application and paying applicable fees to OFT
  4. Undergoing mandatory probity and criminal history checks
  5. Attending an approved Police Station to have fingerprints taken
  6. Receiving a licensing determination from OFT

Processing times and requirements may vary but are typically between 4 – 6 weeks. Applicants should confirm current timeframes with the regulator.

› Important Notes

  • Licensing requirements may change. Applicants should check the most recent information provided by OFT.
  • Completing the Certificate II qualification satisfies the training component but does not guarantee a licence.
  • Licence fees are not included in course fees.
  • Individuals should ensure they understand all obligations that apply once a licence is issued.
